The Home. A Central Theme in Toras RSRH

Rav Hirsch considers the home central to Hashem’s goal of עיקר שכינה בתחתונים.

We first learn about this in the pasuk of

פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ וכבשוה

He explains that פרו means having children and רבו means duplicating yourself by instilling your values in the home. After that מלאו את הארץ. Your home should care about society and be a home that does good beyond its boundaries. If you do that, then וכבשוה you get to have a world and use it to uplift it.

Later by פרשת ויצא Rav Hirsch writes that while you might have thought to seek Hashem in the heavens, it’s not so. Yaakov is starting his journey to build a home and a family based on honesty and goodness. The home is the beginning of Hashem’s reentry in to the world after we were banished from Gan Eden.

On his return the angles meet up with Yaakov. He has returned with a big family. Away from Lavan the family can thrive. The family they encounter is a chiddush to the angles. It’s the first such family in human history.

By korban pesach Rav Hirsch points out that the korban is to be שה לבית אבות שה לבית . The home is the building block of the nation, rooted in the previous generations. And if you have too much meat, seek out a neighbor to share it with. The home is to be a kind, giving place.

Although Shevet Levi received the jobs of the first born, it was originally the בכור of each family. Each family has its unique path. And at the end of days it will go back to that.

כל סיר בירושלים קודש ביהודה Every family’s pot will be holy. (See commentary on Kayin and Hevel’s korbanos)
